Thanks to the folks at Welch’s for sponsoring this blog post. All opinions, as always, are my own.
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I could eat smoothies, omelets, and French toast all day long! All meals are important, but breakfast does the essential job of setting you up for the day—after all, without a fueling breakfast, how are you going to feel come lunch time?
This is why I always strive to whip up a breakfast with plenty of protein, healthy fats, and fiber to power me through my day—as well as polyphenols, which are nutrients found in fruit that provide health benefits. I also want my breakfast to be quick and easy to make on a weekday morning.
This grape juice smoothie recipe accomplishes all of this, featuring natural ingredients with no added sweeteners.
How to Make an Avocado Grape Smoothie
Let’s start off by talking about the base of this avocado fruit smoothie. Instead of using orange juice or almond milk, I made the base Welch’s 100% Grape Juice, made with dark purple Concord grapes.
These Concord grapes are pretty special. Not only do they have a unique tangy sweet taste—but because they’re only in season for a short period each year, the easiest way to get their benefits is from juice made from the grapes.
Thanks to the juice's polyphenol power, you’ll get heart and circulation benefits to help keep your blood flowing freely to and from your ticker. It's also packed with the immune-supporting antioxidant vitamin C, with each 8-ounce glass providing more than 100% of your daily need.
And it may help your athletic performance! In addition to containing naturally energizing fruit nutrients, early research shows that recreational runners who drank the juice daily for a month noticed enhanced performance.
Because you're using frozen banana, you don't need any ice cubes in this grape smoothie. But you can feel free to add a few if you'd like it even colder!
Each smoothie provides 13 grams of protein, making it an excellent source of the fueling nutrient. So you don't have any need to add vanilla protein powder.
So now you get why this avocado protein shake has a base of 100% grape juice!
Why This Grape Juice Smoothie is So Healthy
In addition to the juice, I added avocado, edamame, banana, and mint to this avocado shake recipe.
Instead of using an ingredient like peanut butter or almond butter for a healthy fat, I added avocado to this green smoothie. The avocado supplies heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, helping to keep you fuller for longer.
Edamame is a wonderful source of plant-based protein, which can keep you going throughout the morning. And the banana offers filling fiber, as well as potassium—a mineral many of us need more of in our diets. I always find mint invigorating, so I added some leaves to give this smoothie a pop.
And just so you know, this recipe meets expert guidelines for a heart-healthy recipe. To qualify as a heart-healthy main dish, a recipe needs to have:
- Less than or equal to 500 calories per serving (this has 420 calories)
- Less than or equal to 3.5 grams saturated fat per serving (this has 2 grams)
- Less than 0.5 grams trans fats per serving (this has 0 grams)
- Less than or equal to 600 milligrams sodium per serving (this has 30 milligrams)
- Less than or equal to 2 teaspoons added sugar per serving (this has 0 teaspoons)
