Why I Love Healthy Fruit Pizza
I have a gigantic sweet tooth. But as a registered dietitian, I aim to make dessert on the healthy side. So I started playing around in the kitchen to whip up a dessert pizza that also delivers a dose of nutrition.
I find this dessert pizza to be so satisfying after a light meal. It's also wonderfully easy for when you're wanting something special to make for family dinner tonight.
Now, grab the whole family, and get ready to make this cream cheese fruit pizza! It tastes delicious at room temperature. If you want it even sweeter, add a sprinkling of powdered sugar.
How to Make Fruit Flatbread
How to make fruit pizza? To make the dessert flatbread, I first toasted the pizza crust in the oven to give it a nice golden brown crisp. You can use a crust like this one, or if you're gluten free you can opt for a crust such as this one.
Then, I let the crust cool completely. I didn't use parchment paper or a pizza pan but if you want to, go for it! Next, I whipped up a pizza base with light whipped cream cheese–you don't need to make this overly sweet by using a sugar cookie crust or cream cheese frosting–flavored with orange zest and just a little bit of honey. If you're out of cream cheese, you could try substituting Greek yogurt for a lighter texture.
If you want the cream cheese topping a little sweeter, you could also mix in a drop or two of vanilla extract. And then to finish off the healthy fruit pizza crust recipe, I piled on the toppings: lots of fresh fruit.
And there you have it: a nutritious dessert. Each piece of this fruit pizza is only 100 calories. And you don't even need an overly sweet base like sugar cookie dough! In addition to being yummy, the easy fruit pizza also provides protein, which helps keep hunger at bay.
I find this recipe to be perfect for any occasion–for a weeknight dessert to a holiday treat. It would also make a terrific 4th of July dessert.
